Make it easy & free for callers to contact you by using a 0800 number

Good news for callers to 0800 numbers. Calls to numbers starting with 0800 or 0808 or 0500 will soon be free from all UK phones (including mobiles) under proposals published by Ofcom in December 2010.

No further announcement has yet been made to stipulate exactly when this will happen. Ofcom will give 90 days warning before implementing these changes at which point we will be able to let our customers know.

For owners of 0800 numbers there will be a significant increase in the cost of operating your number once this change takes effect if you receive a high proportion of calls from mobile phones. Presently the caller pays to make a call from a mobile phone to an 0800 number which keeps down the inbound per-minute cost of operating your freephone numbers. Once this becomes a free call from a mobile, per-minute charges will rise to compensate for this.

Tier 2 carriers, or non-major networks, may not have active porting agreements with other companies meaning you may not be able to move your number anywhere if you are unhappy once you start using them.

The table below shows the main networks' current standard call costs to 0800, 0808, and 0500 numbers, for both contract and pay-as-you-go mobile customers:

0800 calls from all UK landlines are free at ALL times.

The telecommunications watchdog Ofcom has stated that it intends to simplify prices in order to reduce confusion about the cost of calls to 0800 numbers. Ofcom has already addressed 0870 number charges and changes are also anticipated to the 0845 range as well.

The charge to use our 0800 and 0808 services start from just 3.75p/minute with no other costs applied.
